Catan – The Classic Island Trading Board Game

You land on an island with nothing but a couple of settlements and whatever the dice give you. Wood, brick, wheat, ore, sheep — never all five, never enough, which is why you have to trade with the people trying to beat you.

The board is different every game because you build it from hexagonal tiles before you start. The robber shows up on a roll of seven and someone loses half their hand. And somewhere around the forty-minute mark a quiet player turns out to have been one road away from winning the whole time.
